Frequently asked questions

Why does the photo already look rotated, and what does this tool do then?

Many cameras and phones keep the image in the same orientation and store the correct rotation in a hidden EXIF flag, which your browser or gallery reads to display it correctly. This tool does something different: it actually rotates the pixels and produces a file that looks the same in any app, even one that ignores that metadata. If your photo already looks fine when opened but needs to look correct everywhere, this is the tool you want.

Does rotating 90° change the width and height of the file?

Yes. A 4000 × 3000 photo rotated 90° becomes 3000 × 4000: the output canvas swaps the two values because what was vertical becomes horizontal. At 180°, the size stays the same because the image is flipped top-to-bottom without changing the sides.

Can I rotate and mirror at the same time?

Yes, and they are applied together in one draw operation: choose the angle and enable one or both mirrors, then the combined transformation is applied before the result is generated. There is no need to rotate, download, and re-upload just to flip it afterward.

What is the difference between horizontal and vertical mirroring?

Horizontal mirroring flips the image left to right, like looking at it in a wall mirror: what was on the left moves to the right. Vertical mirroring flips it top to bottom, like reflecting it in a puddle: what was at the top moves below. You can enable both at once, which produces the same visual result as a 180° rotation.

Does the image lose quality when rotated?

There is no intentional loss like with JPEG quality settings: rotating and mirroring are just pixel moves. But a real re-encoding still happens because the result is sent through the browser encoder again. In JPG and WebP that re-encoding uses a high fixed quality, so the extra loss is minimal; in PNG, which has no quality setting, there is no loss at all. The output format stays the same as the input format.

Why is there no format or quality selector like in other tools on this site?

Because there is no real decision to make. Resizing and compressing change the file size or weight, and that is where a format or quality choice makes sense. Rotating and mirroring do not change either one: the output keeps the original format, so a dropdown would be useless. The only exception is AVIF: the browser cannot re-encode it reliably, so an AVIF input comes out as PNG.

Can I rotate multiple images with the same settings?

Yes. Upload the whole batch, choose the angle and mirroring once, and click process: the same settings are applied to every image in sequence, and you can watch the progress show “N of total” while it runs.

Are my photos ever sent off my device?

No. All rotation and mirroring happen inside your browser in a separate Web Worker. You can confirm it by opening the Network tab in developer tools or by disconnecting the internet after the page loads: the tool still works the same way.
