Frequently asked questions

What exactly is the EXIF data this tool removes?

It is an invisible block of data that many cameras and almost every phone store inside the file itself: the make and model of the device, the exact date and time, and in a large share of phone photos, the GPS coordinates of where it was taken. None of that shows up when you open the image, but it travels with the file wherever you share it.

Does the image get recompressed when the metadata is removed?

No, and that is the part this tool cares about most: instead of decoding the image and re-encoding it —which would lose quality you never asked for— the container segments of the file are rewritten directly. The pixels are never touched; only the metadata block disappears.

Can I see what data the photo carries before deleting it?

Yes. As soon as you upload the file, the tool shows you what it found —camera, date and location, if present— so you know what you are about to remove before downloading the result.

What formats does it accept?

JPG, PNG and WebP, which are the formats that carry EXIF or XMP metadata in practice. PNG and WebP carry it less often than JPG, but the tool checks them all the same.

Does my photo ever leave my device?

No. Both reading the metadata and removing it happen inside your browser. You can confirm it by opening the Network tab in developer tools, or by disconnecting the internet after the page loads: the tool keeps working the same way.
