Frequently asked questions

Which formats can I convert between?

JPG, PNG and WebP, in any direction: you can upload one of the three and pick any of the three as the destination, including the same format you uploaded. For HEIC, AVIF, TIFF or BMP there is a separate tool —Convert HEIC, AVIF and TIFF— because the browser cannot reliably re-encode those formats.

Do I lose quality when converting to JPG or WebP?

Slightly, yes: JPG and WebP are lossy formats and the image is re-encoded at a high fixed quality (0.92), with no slider on screen because that is not a decision left to you here. Converting to PNG adds no compression loss, though a file that already lost detail earlier —a JPG, for instance— does not get that detail back.

What happens to transparency when I convert a PNG to JPG?

It is lost. JPG does not support an alpha channel, so any transparent area in the original PNG gets filled with a solid color during conversion. If your image has transparency you need to keep, choose WebP as the destination instead of JPG: WebP does support transparency.

Can I convert several images with different formats at once?

Yes. Upload a mixed batch —some JPG, some PNG— and pick a single destination format: every file comes out converted to that same format, regardless of what format it was uploaded in.

Are my images ever sent off my device?

No. All conversion happens inside your browser, in a separate Web Worker. You can confirm it by opening the Network tab in developer tools, or by disconnecting the internet after the page loads: the tool keeps working the same way.
