Frequently asked questions

What is inside the .zip I download?

Six files: favicon.ico, which carries the 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions inside one container; separate 16 and 32 pixel PNGs; the 180 pixel apple-touch-icon that iPhone and iPad use on the home screen; and the 192 and 512 pixel icons Chrome on Android uses when someone adds your site to their home screen. Nothing more, because nothing more is needed — each of those six is asked for by a specific place.

Where does the HTML snippet next to the download go?

Inside your page’s <head> tag, alongside the title and the meta tags. The six files belong in the root of your site — the same folder as index.html — because the snippet points at them with paths that start from the root. Put them somewhere else and you have to edit those paths.

How big should the image I upload be?

At least 512 pixels on its longest side, which is the largest size in the set: below that the big icons are scaled up and look blurry. Size does not matter for an SVG, since a vector is rasterised at whatever resolution is needed. And detail that is invisible at 512 pixels will be invisible at 16.

What happens if my logo is not square?

It is centred on a square canvas with a transparent background, never stretched and never cropped. A favicon is always displayed in a square slot, so the alternatives would be distorting the logo or cutting part of it off — and neither is a decision a tool should make on your behalf.

Does my image get uploaded anywhere?

No. Every size, the .ico container and the .zip are all produced inside your browser. You can confirm it with the Network tab of your developer tools open, or by disconnecting the internet once the page has loaded: the tool keeps working exactly the same.
