Frequently asked questions

How much weight can I remove from an image?

It depends on how compressed it already is. A camera or phone photo in JPG often drops between 60% and 85% without being noticeable at a glance. A screenshot in PNG converted to WebP shrinks similarly. An image that already went through WhatsApp or another compressor hardly changes: that work is already done. That is why the tool shows the resulting size before you download, instead of promising a percentage.

Is the file size I see before downloading the final one?

Yes, and it is not an estimate based on a formula. Every time you move the slider, the image is actually compressed in your browser and the size you see is the exact weight of that file. When you click the button, the downloaded result is this exact output, not a similar one.

Why does my PNG not shrink?

Because PNG is a lossless format: it stores the image pixel by pixel and does not support quality settings. The browser ignores that setting when writing PNG, so a PNG that is read and saved as PNG stays roughly the same size. If you want it to shrink, change the output format to WebP, which compresses more, or to JPG. Promising lossless PNG compression would be misleading.

Why does the result sometimes weigh more than the original?

This happens when you recompress an image that was already highly compressed, especially at high quality. Re-encoding adds fresh data without recovering the data that was discarded before. When it happens, we show it with a visible +% instead of hiding it: then lower the quality, try WebP, or keep the original file.

What quality should I choose?

For photographs, 60 to 80 is the range where most people see no difference and the file size drops a lot. Below 50, artifacts start to appear in skies and around text. Above 90 the file grows quickly without visible gain. Move the slider and watch the size: the comparison is right in front of you, no guessing required.

Does it preserve EXIF metadata?

No. Re-encoding removes hidden metadata such as camera model, date and especially GPS location. For publishing a photo online that is often a privacy benefit and also saves a few kilobytes. If you need to keep it, this is not the tool.

Is it useful for a 2 MB form limit or for sending by email?

It is exactly the use case it was built for. Upload the image, move the slider until the size is below the limit you were given, and download. Since the number you see is real, there is no need to test, upload, get rejected, and start over.

Are my images ever sent off my device?

No. Compression happens inside your browser and neither the original file nor the compressed one travels to any server: you can disconnect the internet after the page loads and the tool keeps working. There is also no registration, no watermarking, and no daily image cap that pushes you to pay.
